Having read about Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, your task is now to apply his ideas – that we are ultimatelymotivated by our unsatisfied needs (Deficit or “D” Needs) – to the realm of education. Remember to complete this, you may need to do some additional research into the work of Maslow.
Imagine that you are the principal of an inner-city high school (or elementary school, if you prefer) in downtown Hamilton , one of Canada ’s poorest neighbourhoods, where students may well be from an impoverished background.
To Do: Design a school program to help these students succeed in school and in life. Your program should include at least 10 points. Beneath each program item, explain your rationale for including it. Be prepared to explain your thinking to the group, and why Abraham Maslow might approve of any particular initiative. You may work on this with a partner, or in a small group, but you should end with your own program. Once you have roughed out your program below, write it up, and prepare to present it to the group.
