- Peter Berger, Sociologist

Essay: A Profile of a Pioneer of Social Science

“I have learned the novice can often see things that the expert overlooks. All that is necessary is not to be afraid of making mistakes, or of appearing naive.”

 Abraham Maslow (1908 - 1970), Psychologist

Your task is to produce a profile of a pioneer in any one of the fields. You should begin by consulting the text’s web site (found on the left hand side of our website, under "Useful Sites". Follow the links through from Student Resources to the Introduction section. There you will find a significant amount of very useful information - look for a link to Pioneers of Psychology. You should also consult the text, google key-word searches, check out the APA (American Psychological Association), also under "Useful Sites," and visit the HSC library (but your text may serve as your print source) where there are a number of relevant books.

Your profile should be between 500-1000 words (2-4) pages double-spaced - absolute maximum (anything above four sides will not be read or marked.). It should be laid out in a standard five-paragraph format, and include an introduction, developing paragraphs, and a conclusion.

It should discuss:

1) The life and times of the individual (including the forces that shaped his/her thinking)
2) Major contributions
3) The impact of the person, and his or her relevance today.
4  It should also include a Works Cited (Refer to the Senior School Study Guide), with a least five internet (you may refer to Wikipedia, but please use a variety of other sources, and one print (i.e., a book) source.
  • Please do not simply cut-and-paste from the articles you find, but rather read for understanding and rework and reword the material for your own purposes.
  • As noted above, you are be required to provide an internal citations within your text as part of this exercise.
  • But your paper should be well sourced, and your Works Cited page produced correctly.
  • Presentation: After having submitted your paper, you will be required to make 5 minute presentation on your pioneer; you should make note of at least two important features you have written about, and be prepared to talk about them to the rest of the group. (See Rubric on First Class.)
Due by: Monday, Oct. 25 at the beginning of class.
