Malcolm Gladwell - What makes high-achievers different?

Hi All, the attached video - although a little grainy - is an excellent discussion of Gladwell's thoughts on "Why so some succeed and others fail," encapusulated in his book: Outliers. It's worth spending a little time with, and handily dispels the notion that anyone is truly self-made. Rather, it depends on any other number of variables found in our environment, and related to something as simple as our date of birth. Who'd have thought it? Go figure.

Take a few moments to review and comment on the video clip. What advantages (or disadvantages) do you have. Don't be overly personal, remember this blog is open to the world, but explain whether or not you agree with the clip, and give some supporting evidence as to why you believe that is the case.

Gladwell Archive and Interesting Material

Meaningful Work through Passion, not Genius

This video on what Gladwell calls "meaningful work" is a really important one. Again, he draws from his book, Outliers, and gives the Beatles, and Bill Gates as examples of the idea, which argues that the key to excellence is not genuis, but rather passion, and being willing (and "willing" is the key word) -to go to any lengths to develop a skill or a craft, be it music or computer programming, to an extraordinarily high degree. It is this, he believes, that serves as the true foundation of success.

After watching the clip, add a comment of your own below: Do you agree with Gladwell or not? Do you think his examples are legitimate? Can you think of an example of your own? Do a Google search of "Successful People" and see you can find a story that supports the argument. If you believie genius is "born" not made, find an example of that.

How does a Serial Killer's Wife Not Know?

Questions from a physcologists perspective:

1.How does one finish a day of killing and come home to a loving wife?

2.Would the killer feel guilty about lying to his wife?

3.How is it possible to lead a double life without the woman your living with knowing?

4.After finding out your husband was a killer, could the wives still love them?

How do serial killer's wife not know?

It is said that most serial killers are your average person and that there really is know way to describe what a serial killer looks like. Well in this case that statement is very true. Williams who worked as head of an air force base was happily married and was claimed to be a kind and thoughtful husband. People are asking how is it possible that William's wife not know about his fetish break in's? Phycologists say why would a wife know. Serial killers tend to lead a double life keeping it a secret from their love ones. Even if there is suspicous behavoir it is to much to suspect that the person your living with is a killer. For example John Wayne Gacey would invite boys to his home and proceed to murder them and burry the boys in the basement. Gacey would do this every weekend because his wife would leave to visit family and friends. She never discovered his secret hobbie and carried on clueless and naive. Gary Ridgeway killed four woman while married to Judith Mawson and she had no clue. Ridgeway was said to be the perfect husband treating Judith like he was a coompletely different person. Wifes are way to in love to suspect that their spouse could be doing something so disturbing.

Russell Williams Trail

Russell Williams murdered 2 women: Marie-France Comeau and Jessica Elizabeth Lloyd. Before he became a murderer, Russell started out with simple breaking and entering and escalated to stealing women's, especially young women's, underwear. Russell Williams wouldn't just steal them though he would wear them, taking hundreds of photos of himself lying on their beds wearing and being surrounded by their underwear and bras whilst touching himself. Williams then began to break into peoples homes while they were in them and would stay in their homes for up to 2 hours. Williams started out with crazy fetishes, and rape, then he evolved to murder. Williams broke into Marie Comeau's home beat her and then asphyxiated her while video taping the whole thing. Then he kidnapped Jessica Llyod took her to her cottage and made sex tapes of her, but that was not all, he also raped and tortured her for a day before dumping her body in a field. Russell was tried and pled guilty. Williams who worked at a military base is now going through a month long process of being stripped of his military rights.


My Questions from a Psychologist's perspective:


1: What is his mental state?

2: Did he his authority over Comeau help him to murder her?

3: Did he have problems as a child?

4: Has he been violent before?
